PROJECT ON POLITICAL PARTICIPATION OF LGBTI PEOPLE KICKS OFF IN ALBANIA

27 Sep

Open Mind Spectrum Albania started the implementation of a new project which aims to bring the topic of equality for LGBTI people into the public political agenda prior to the 2017 elections. This project is part of a broader strategy to encourage greater political participation of LGBTI people in the Balkans as a region, and in Albania, as a tool to advance towards equality. Open Mind Spectrum Albania (OMSA) and Victory Institute will collaborate on this project and all activities, and actions will be branded under the same theme, “Vote for Equality” campaign.
The project will begin with conducting and publishing a research on LGBTI political participation in Albania and how it’s relationship with advancements toward equality. From this, two reports will be published: one on LGBTI political participation in Albania, and another smaller LGBTI inclusion guide for political parties.
The data gathered will be presented on the campaign website in order to be used as an advocacy and voter education tool, allowing for transparency and informed voting decisions. The voters will be able to go through the policies of their potential political leaders and access information on how they address the issues of LGBTI people in their party’s program. This information will be presented during the public debates that will be organized to bring together politicians, civil society actors and create a public dialogue on human rights of LGBTI people.
This data will also be used in three leadership summits to take place in three main cities. The summits will serve as half-day trainings for LGBTI leaders and will plant the seed of political participation as a tool to advance equality. Participants will be invited to collaborate in organizing the debates in order to further their leadership development skills.
Overall, the activities involved with this project will work in harmony to help increase political participation of the LGBTI population and achieve the goal of bringing the topic of equality for LGBTI people into public political agenda of the June 2017 elections.
