Attack on Tiffany club in Ljubljana, Slovenia

01 Nov

On Friday, 1 November 2019, at 6 am, after the club was closed, a group of bullies attacked the Tiffany Club in Metelkova Street, in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.
The attackers smashed the front door of the building which houses the Tiffany and Monokel LGBT clubs, and stormed the club. Visitors and members of the club took refuge in the interiors and barricaded the doors before the bullies. The attackers wanted to approach them, smashing down the hall and the door, threahtning them with insults. They damaged the corridors and smashed windows of the building. Thankfully, no one was injured, but people in the club suffered a lot of stress and trauma. The police were immediately informed of the attack, and on the arrival of the police the attackers fled.
Our member organisations ŠKUC Magnus and Škuc LL strongly condemn the violent event and urge the competent authorities to take action against the abusers in accordance with the law.
We are extremely concerned that hate motivated violence and crime against LGBTI persons is on the rise in Slovenia. In the last month alone, we have witnessed two violent attacks on LGBT people. However, Republic of Slovenia still has not adequate hate crime provisions in its criminal legislation. All violence and hate speech based on sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, as well as incitement to hatred of LGBT persons, must be stopped immediately!
