Official Statement on Written Contribution on the position of LGBTI persons to the 3rd Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of Republic of Albania, that ERA and its four members from Albania (ALEANCA LGBT, PINK Embassy, Pro LGBT and Streha) have submitted in October 2018 for the purpose of the Third cycle of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Albania, was officially presented today at the Pre-session in Geneva, Switzerland, organised by UPR-Info. Nikki Brörman from COC Netherlands presented the Statement on behalf of our Coalition, highlighting the main findings and recommendations from the Written Contribution, which received strong attention.
The Pre-sessions are organised one month in advance of the formal Review at the Working Group. Selected CSOs and national human rights institutions (NHRIs) join a panel in which they each present a different human rights theme affecting the State under Review. They then provide recommendations that they would like the Recommending States to make at the UPR. Albania will be formally reviewed in May 2019 and we hope there will be LGBTI-specific recommendations provided, that will lead to the improvement of the position of LGBTI persons in the country.
