LGBTI Equal Rights Association for Western Balkans and Turkey
The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted its first resolution on intersex rights concerning discriminatory practices in sports. Women with variations of sex characteristics are required to undergo unnecessary, humiliating, irreversible and harmful medical procedures in order to participate as women in sport competitions. The regulations for the female classification, that were published by the International Association for Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 2018, are not reasonable and discriminate against women born with variations of sex characteristics. Therefore, the UN calls for creating policies in sports that include the participation of intersex persons. The resolution was brought by South Africa to issue the intersection of discrimination against race and sex, that women in sports face. Moreover, the resolution highlights the right of bodily integrity and autonomy.
