Member states of the World Health Organisation agreed on 25 May 2019 to adopt the Eleventh revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), to come into effect on 1 January 2022.
This means trans identities will formally be depathologized. In the ICD-11, trans related categories have been removed from the Chapter on Mental and Behavioral Disorders and will no longer be treated as a mental disorder. At the same time, new trans related categories have been introduced: Gender Incongruence of Adolesence and Adulthood and Gender Incongruence of Childhood. 
This is at the same time the beginning of a new phase, which will now have to focus on the effective implementation and assessment at the country levels. Also, it is the beginning of a phase to finally fully depathologize trans idenitites through ensuring removal of national pathologizing regulations, full access to quick, transparent and accessible legal gender recognition process, trans affirmative healthcare, as well as future review of ICD-11 and respect to universal access to healthcare.
ICD is the foundation for the identification of health trends and statistics globally, and the international standard for reporting diseases and health conditions. It is the diagnostic classification standard for all clinical and research purposes. ICD defines the universe of diseases, disorders, injuries and other related health conditions.
