LGBTI Equal Rights Association for Western Balkans and Turkey
On the 14 February 2019 the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the rights of intersex people in order to ensure the protection of intersex people’s bodily integrity and human rights. It functions as an addition to the intersex resolution that was adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in 2017.
By adopting this resolution the European Parliament criticizes sex-normalising treatments and surgery. The resolution encourages Member States to take measures to protect the bodily integrity of intersex people. Additionally it requests the European Comission and the Member States to act on the violence and discrimination that intersex people face in the European Union. Other issues addressed by the resolution include the need of adequate counselling for intersex people, measures to end the stigma and pathologisation and increased funding for intersex-led civil society organisations.
