IDAHOT IN TURKEY: DISCUSSIONS ON INCLUSION AND INCREASED CONSERVATISM

LGBTI organizations in Turkey are holding many awareness events around International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia – May 17th – aiming to bring up some of the most pressing issues related to the country right now.
Kaos GL, is hosting a platform where inclusiveness by local governments will be discussed. International speakers, activists and representatives of Turkish Municipalities will join the meeting. A presentation of the study “Situation of LGBTI employees in private sector in Turkey” will take place in cooperation with the German Embassy and German companies operating in the country.
Moreover one major event called “Desire” will host several panels focusing on questions such as “Whose concern is homophobia”, and also discussions on security, the right to protest, tactics to deal with increased conservatism and homophobia in Turkey.
Finally SPoD is organizing a panel on May 17th in cooperation with Bilgi University and the Dutch, Swedish and American Consulates. The panel will focus on 1) education strategies for LGBTI rights, 2) working with local governments and 2) LGBTI friendl workplaces. Other cultural events will follow.
Moreover SPoD in cooperation with Amnesty International are hosting the “Fly Your Phobia” event in Caddebostan Beach Park in Istanbul. Participants will fly kites with messages against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia while Amnesty International will launch #MyIstanbulPride campaign to raise attention on the security of Istanbul Pride planned to take place this 26th of June.
